Dry Eye
Why Do I Have Dry Eyes?
Dry eyes can occur when our eyes do not make enough tears or the tear film can be inadequate.

The tear film is made up of 3 layers:
-
Watery layer (aqueous): The majority of our tears is made of this layer which cleans the eye and washes away debris.
-
Mucous layer: This helps tears stick to the eye.
-
Oily layer (lipid): It makes the tear surface smooth and keeps tears from drying up too quickly.

How Can I Improve Dry Eyes?
-
Avoid overhead air vents or fans blowing air towards your face at work and home.
-
If you are at the computer most of the day, blink completely as often as possible (upper eyelid touches lower eyelid); take breaks to rest your eyes.
-
Consider a humidifier in your bedroom, office, or anywhere you spend extended time.
-
Wear sunglasses to prevent direct air flow into the eye when outside or driving.
-
If using a space heater, be sure to limit the time of use and keep some artificial tears close by.
-
Moisture chamber glasses (onion glasses) or eye masks while sleeping can be purchased online.
-
Omega 3 (Essential Fatty Acids) supplementation 2g daily may help. Foods such as walnuts, salmon, tuna, and ground flax seed are rich in omega 3 fatty acids.
